Friday 11th October 2013 – Bike ***** Moissac to Castelsarrasin and St. Nocolas de la Grave – sunny periods

A very chilly start to the morning, it was 6 degrees outside and 7 in the van!! We had the heater on for a bit and didn’t brave the elements for our exercises. Set out after breakfast to travel about 30 miles to Moissac where the canal carries on and crosses the River Tarn. We called in at St. Nicolas de la Grave where the Rivers Garonne and Tarn meet. It is a beautiful spot and there is a centre there for sailing, fishing etc.. We had a walk. Carried on to Moissac and parked up right on the bank of the Tarn. We packed lunch and set out on another epic bike ride. We cycled up to where the canal cuts through the town and followed the tow path over another aquaduct over the Tarn this time. The canal is a lot prettier here than yesterday with lots of trees lining the banks and similar lock cottages to the Canal du Midi (which this one meets and joins at Toulouse). We stopped at Castelsarrasin for our lunch sitting at the canal basin near a sculptured fountain. We then cycled inland along some busier roads, and stopped to pinch some apples. They had just been harvesting the crop and had left lots lying underneath the trees which were obviously going to be left! Mag only picked up the ones that had rolled towards the road and was horrified that I picked some left overs off the trees! We eventually return to St. Nicolas de la Grave, have a look round the deserted village and cycle round the centre we visited this morning. There was a bird hide along a track within the centre so we went along there but the hide was shut. Cycled back along another track with lots of tree plantations. Back on the busier road for a short while until we crossed the bridge over the Garonne and re-joined the canal. We cycled round the town of Moissac which is very old and is famous for having some cloisters attached to the huge church. We didn’t go and look at them but they are a Grand Site of the Midi Pyrenees! Back to the van after 21 miles! for a well earned cuppa and to warm up!! When it was dark and the Napoleon bridge we are parked near was lit up we put lots more clothes on and walked back to the town to have a mosey round, it was virtually deserted and pretty chilly!
